Welcome to my yard

Shadow At Play

Shadow, our friendly pit bull, would like to welcome you to our yard. We are still doing a lot of work on it, but progress is being made steadily. The biggest project of the spring was making our yard completely fenced in. When we moved in, the back side had a fence that leaned in a very frightening manner. I was actually hesitant to stand under it, in case it fell over and plowed me into the ground like a nail into a board.

Here is what the back fence used to look like.

The south side fence was only half up, and it leaned awfully too.

Side note: You can tell this was before I bought my Canon Digital Rebel.

On the north side, there was no fence at all!

This however is all in the past!

Shadow would like for you to come this way, please.

Welcome to my yard...

First, we are showing you the former gap between the house and garage which was unfenced when we moved in. Aaron did purchase that fence panel pre-made to match the south side fence. However, he built the gate and pergola-style arbor piece by piece! It isn’t actually finished yet – we need to get a latch for the gate and I’m going to hang these beautiful glass balls from my reception (look behind Aaron) off the top of the pergola-style arbor.

I’m also going to move that hydrangea to the flip side of the fence and put in a dwarf fruit tree where the bush currently is.  On the other side of the fence, Aaron and I are building up some massive flower beds that will have all kinds of sun flowers in it.  There will also be a patio going in.  In a future post, if anyone is interested, I can make up a drawing showing what I mean.  Over the patio will be a pergola that matches the pergola-style arbor.

Shadow At Play

Oops, sorry. Shadow became a little distracted when I threw that indestructible KONG Ball for her, didn’t she? (Some time remind me to tell you the story of how Shadow destroyed three tennis balls within one toss each. This Kong ball has lasted five months!)

Shadow At Play

Oh, there she is! Welcome back, Shadow.

On the back fence (west side), Aaron pulled all of the old fence posts and put new ones in, and then reattached the panels to the new posts. I forgot to take a picture of it, and please don’t shoot me. Shadow was really insistent that I play with her.

My yard

Here’s the south side fence, again. There’s the fountain which we had working for all of an hour before I put a hole in the liner. We’ve picked up a patch, so this project should be finished (again) soon. You can see that we have a lovely grape vine growing on the grape arbor over the fountain, and some lattice up to help block the neighbor’s view and keep the dogs and kids in. It’s really an inconvenience to have the fountain and arbor there, but sometime I’ll tell you the story of how we couldn’t fence in our back yard through that spot…

Shadow would like you to ignore all of the weeds, because when I have to go weed and clean out the yard, she doesn’t get played with as much. She would like you to notice the vibrant peonies, though!

My yard

Shadow wants you to ooh and aah over the sturdy chain link fence portion here on the north. Because it is so hard to get any light into our backyard with all the stately trees everywhere, I requested that the north side of the yard have a chain link fence so that the raised beds closest to the fence would get ample sunlight. It also provides a wonderful trellis for the beans to grow on! This year the back right two beds are empty, with one currently being fertilized by our pet rabbit. The left back bed is overgrow with lettuce that seeded itself last year and strawberries from this year.

The front left bed has various peppers, celery, eggplant, and cauliflower. The middle bed is full of nothing but onions and a few weeds. The front right bed has various tomato plants in it, as well as bunch of little tomato plants that seeded themselves from the cherry tomatoes last year. I’ll be yanking them all out when Shadow stops making me throw the ball for her.

Welcome to my yard...

Here on this side we can see the lattice I had Aaron put up over the door to the garage this year.  On the left side is trumpet honeysuckle and on the right is a moonflower.  The honeysuckle has gone mad over the last year or two, while the moonflower was only planted last month.  It’ll catch up… Eventually.  I will be planting more vining style plants over the pergola-style arbor as well.  I just haven’t decided which yet.  On the left of the trumpet honeysuckle is our raspberry patch.  I have a fence-type design in mind to string the raspberry plants to, but that hasn’t been finished yet.  The lattice around the door is obviously also not finished – a top piece needs to be put up.  I think this fall we are going to cut the trumpet honeysuckle all the way back so that it will start vining through the lattice from the ground up.  Trying to manually vine the plant when it is that huge is just impossible, which is why it is so bushy on the bottom since this lattice is new.

Well, thanks for visiting! Come back the next time we grill out and make s’mores.

(And, please don’t make fun of how we have three different fence styles in our yard. I’ll have to poke you repeatedly in the arm until your arm goes numb.)
