Choosing to Live Life Simply and Happily

Chalk the Walk

When are you allowed to go hog wild on your city streets with chalk? In Mount Vernon, Iowa, we are allowed to take to the streets during the Chalk the Walk festival held every May. The (supposed) largest Madonnari festival in Iowa, Chalk the Walk brings thousands of visitors and residents up to the main street in uptown to view the temporary works of art. Local food vendors are available those who are hungry, festival-goers vote on their favorite panel and awards are handed out, and a very large community-level art piece is completed every year. Get Your Graffiti On! – Chalk the Walk 2012

It’s that time of year again with my second-favorite festival in Mount Vernon: Chalk the Walk! Live musicians, local food vendors, and artists flock to the streets during the festival where chalk panels are sketched and blended on our temporarily-closed main street. The community gets together and for 10 bucks a square, you get a box of chalk and a small part of a huge art piece to do your thing. In the end, the patchwork panel (too large to really comprehend on street-level) is completed and everyone gives a sigh of relief. I’m...

Chalking the Walk

I’m a wet blanket, lately, so I’m going to clue you in to posts that I hope to make soon. Taking the kids to the ren faire Aaron and I’s joint bachelor/bachelorette party Faces my kids make Living History Farms Updates to my garden (filled out all the beds with compost, things have sprouted, and plants are being planted) Updates to my yard (fence is finished on three of the four sides, want to put in natural prairie grass near AC) They don’t sound very interesting, but I’ll try to make them interesting. After...
